PCTFE - Polychloro-trifluoroethylene

Polychloro trifluoroethylene (abbreviated PCTFE) A crystalline polymer that is known primarily for its barrier properties. PCTFE films are optically clear, bondable to other carrier materials such as PVC and PET. It is primarily used in blister packaging for pharmaceuticals due to its excellent resistance to moisture. When thermoformed, PCTFE exhibits excellent detail and clarity. Common tradenames for PCTFE are Aclar, Kel F

Benefits & Liabilities of PCTFE

Benefits:

  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • No water absorption
  • Lowest water vapor permeability
  • Excellent resistance to to UV and X-ray radiation.
  • Excellent Barrier properties
  • Very low creep under load
  • Non-Flammable
  • FDA compliant
  • Good electrical insulating properties
  • Optically clear

Liabilities:

  • High Cost
  • Max use temp is lower than other fluoropolymers (150 C)
  • Not compatible with chlorinated solvents
