PEI - Polyetherimide

Polyetherimide (abbreviated PEI) is an amorphous, amber-to-transparent thermoplastic polyimide with characteristics similar to the related plastic PEEK. Relative to PEEK, PEI is cheaper, but less temperature-resistant and lower in impact strength. PEI has a high dielectric strength, natural flame resistance, and extremely low smoke generation. PEI has excellent mechanical properties and performs in continuous use to 340°F (170°C).

Benefits:

  • Continuous use temperature to 180 Deg. C
  • Inherent flame retardancy
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures
  • Good UV resistance
  • Transparent to visible, infrared and microwave radiation
  • FDA compliant

Liabilities:

  • Very High cost
  • Not suitable for use with chlorinated solvents
  • Must be dried before processing
  • Low colorability
